Issue 2: Finding Your Footing – The Team

Editorial

Emily Garbig, Editorial Team

Emily (she/her) often finds herself getting joyfully lost in storyworlds. She is currently in her final semester of an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English at Carleton University. Following her graduation, she is excited to continue travelling the world. Until then, you can find her in a local coffee shop with a fantasy novel and a matcha latte.

Hannah Kirwin, Editorial Team

Hannah (she/her) is a fourth year English student with a concentration in Creative Writing. She joined Sumac Magazine to gain more editing experience. She loves anything horror, and if she could create a magazine, it would be called #BookTok, reviewing what #BookTok books are worth reading.

Farane Zaidi, Editorial Team

Farane Zaidi (she/her) is a fourth year student completing her Bachelor of Arts (B.A) Honours degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in Greek and Roman Studies at Carleton University. Her lifelong ambition is to become an academic librarian and a novelist. For Farane, writing is an escape from the real world—a realm of absolute artistic freedom and boundless creativity. Her other hobbies include playing chess, piano, and hiking in nature.

Mady, Editorial Team

Mady (she/they) is an English major with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. They joined the Sumac team for the opportunity to work in Carleton’s Book Arts Lab and to experience first-hand the process of putting together a literary magazine. Mady’s areas of interest include fantasy novels, poetry of any kind, animated TV shows and movies, fanfiction, and watching other people play D&D.

Nicoletta is an English student at Carleton who had been pursuing their degree since 2019. She is very happy to have been part of the second issue of Sumac as one of the poetry editors, and is overjoyed to have watched months of hard work culminate in such an awesome magazine. They hope you enjoy this issue of the magazine as much as they enjoy it. In her spare time, Nicoletta is a writer herself, or can otherwise be found playing with her rats or crocheting.

Adaire Green, Editorial Team

Fourth year English student completing English Honours BA. She loves applying psychology to literature and exploring various cultures through different literary works.

Managerial

Alessia Pinelli, Managerial Team

Alessia is a fourth year Law and English major with a passion for all things literary. She is an avid reader of fiction novels and loves staying on top of book trends (thank you Book Tok!). Alessia is excited to work as part of the managerial team for SUMAC and hopes its readers enjoy their hard work and dedication to this great publication.

Dula Deb, Managerial Team

Dula Deb (she/her/hers) is a fourth year Bachelor of Social Work student minoring in English and Community Engagement. She chose to be a part of SUMAC’s second edition to help enhance her love of and perspective on creative writing from the publishing and logistical side of things. If she could create a literary magazine, she would create one that focuses on an authors tangents and rambles to allow for readers to decompress after a long day as a gentle reminder to not allow for life to be taken so seriously all the time. Outside of her constant rambling about anything and anything that comes to her mind, Dula has a passion for social justice, community building and the arts, and hopes to one day pursue a career that allows for those passions to come together (whatever that may be). You can follow her on instagram @dualartistry

Trudi Vaughan, Managerial Team

Trudi (she/her) is a book lover who enjoys hiking and travelling. She joined the Sumac team to explore the publishing process. She eagerly seeks new adventures both in books and the great outdoors. If she were to start a literary magazine it would be full of puns, titled, “The Punny Pages”.

Abby Adair, Managerial Team

Abby is an Economics student who loves a good literary magazine.
