I went into the <\/span>Superstore<\/span><\/i> looking for a head of lettuce.
<\/span>In the snack aisle, I found my sixth grade classroom:
<\/span>Go-Go squeeze and fruit cup,
<\/span>cherries eaten first, pears last.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I haven\u2019t spoken to my mother in a few weeks,
<\/span>but I could have sworn she was standing right next to me
<\/span>in the fluorescent light of the supermarket,
<\/span>rummaging through the clearance rack
<\/span>looking for discounted shampoo and conditioner,
<\/span>maybe a cheap treat:
<\/span>This is something I learned from her,
<\/span>along with the universal truth
<\/span>that you always forget to buy something
<\/span>even if it was on your grocery list.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My father has never been the conversational type
<\/span>but I called him last night
<\/span>to ask how he cooks his brussel sprouts.
<\/span>I found a pack of them in the back of my fridge,
<\/span>whispering that they would start to rot
<\/span>(Turn to sludge)
<\/span>if I ignored them one day longer.
<\/span>So I called up my dad
<\/span>knowing that I could only ever eat them
<\/span>if they were made <\/span>his<\/span><\/i> special way.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I finally got home from the store:
<\/span>snacks stacked in the cupboard,
<\/span>produce stuffed in the fridge,
<\/span>but the lettuce drawer still empty.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You always forget <\/span>something<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
