She taught her sons how to plant rice&nbsp;<br>fields that stretch to the Pacific Ocean.&nbsp;<br>She taught her daughter, my mama, English&nbsp;<br>until she spoke it with a fluent tongue,&nbsp;<br>ready for a life far from home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>In Toronto, mama tells us, \u201cThis is home.\u201d&nbsp;<br>My sister cries in Tagalog, too young&nbsp;<br>to understand she must exchange her tongue&nbsp;<br>for one that prefers pasta over rice.&nbsp;<br>Soon, she\u2019ll be fluent in English&nbsp;<br>and will no longer smell like the ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I search my memories for this ocean&nbsp;<br>\u2014for remnants of a faraway home.&nbsp;<br>I try to recall, but English&nbsp;<br>makes me forget. When I was young,&nbsp;<br>I disliked the taste of rice:&nbsp;<br>too plain, too sticky\u2014a Canadian tongue&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>my titas would say. Old memories rip at my tongue. <br>So close now, I can taste salt from the ocean&nbsp;<br>and smell jasmine off freshly plucked rice\u2014&nbsp;<br>\u201cWhen are you coming back home?\u201d&nbsp;<br>Lola\u2019s voice is brittle, like flakes of young&nbsp;<br>coconut toasted in a pan. Over the phone, English&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:675px\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an abandoned language. English\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannot capture the music in the native tongue.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSoon,\u201d mama lies, unaware her youngest\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is listening. For years, I believed this ocean\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of a promise. But going back home\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not as cheap as the wild rice\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the flooded fields. \u201cFirst you soak the rice\u2014\u201d <br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mama instructs me in English,\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2014measure it with your fingers like back home.\u201d\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lessons and stories flow from her tongue,\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distracting me from the decades that go by. The scent of the ocean <br \/>still lingers on her skin: a perfume made out of dreams and youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I cook rice with mama, I exchange my<br \/>tongue for one that forgets English.
